The Zane Brothers Founded Wheeling in 1769. A full and complete history of this is chronicled in the first part of the book. Boat Building was Wheeling’s First Major Industry. Wheeling was building Barges, Flatboats, Keelboats, Pirogues, and Bateaux from the 1770s, and Steamboats from 1815-1900. This book Maps where Wheeling’s Boat Yards were and who were the Builders. Also documented is the little known fact that in 1953 a boat building company, Yates Marine Construction established itself in Wheeling building Diesel Towboats (ten) nine of which are still on the river. Included are Early Wheeling Street Maps detailing and identifying Wheeling’s Businesses and Dwellings. Importantly, also included in this book is a handy reference guide to Wheeling’s Streets with Maps of Early Streets, and for what and for whom they were named. This highly researched and well-written book is a must have to Celebrate in 2019, Wheeling’s 250th Anniversary.
